Many of us are spending at least some of the week working from home if not the majority of our time. Creating a space at home that is comfortable, organized, and special is super important to me. 

A well designed interior can have a significant effect on how we feel. My firm’s goal is to understand our client’s preferences in order to create happiness in their home. In considering all aspects of the interior, from function and comfort to color and lighting, we  create spaces that make our clients feel comfortable and joyful.

This is the stone floor I designed for our renovated apartment way back in 2000. I loved the idea of creating a modern mosaic in our pre-war apartment building that had been designed by the legendary architect Rosario Candela. The floor had a beautiful stylized flower inlaid in the center with a complimenting border around the perimeter of the room.  Although we loved the floor, after 20 years, the floor had seen better days. It was time for a change. My husband and I liked the idea of choosing a light stone to contrast against the ebony wainscoting. I knew a stone slab floor would have a modern, streamlined look, and it would have less grout than a mosaic floor.

I love color in all its forms. Whether bright and bold, deep and moody, or soft and subtle, all hues have so much potential. Choosing the color palette that feels right to you is super important,  because it transforms how we feel and experience a room. Although subtle, a neutral palette can be surprisingly powerful. It can make a space feel calm, inviting, and luxurious. It can transport us from our hectic lives into a space that is tranquil and harmonious.

I hope you are all staying healthy and sane! During this pandemic, I am so grateful for all the essential workers who are working so hard to keep us safe. I am also very appreciative for technology that allows so many of us to work remotely. With more people working from home than ever before, it’s a great time for me to focus on home offices.

This summer, team ERA took a trip to New Canaan, CT to see Philip Johnson’s famed Glass House. Its use of materials, open floor plan, and immersion in nature were all groundbreaking when it was built in 1949. He used the largest panes of glass available at the time as walls. As someone who is also inspired by nature, I loved how Johnson seamlessly integrated his home into the landscape.

“HELP!!!!” Is exactly what our clients asked for when they asked us to renovate their NYC apartment. They had lived in the apt for 20 years and felt it no longer reflected their tastes or lifestyle.

I recently visited Santorini and was taken with these incredibly striking plants. Looking at the photos later, the colors reminded me of a boy’s bedroom we designed on the Upper East Side. In both cases, the red-orange adds an exuberant contrast to the saturated blues. I began to think about how color palettes that work in nature often translate seamlessly into interiors.

Recently, one of our clients asked us to transform their attic into a chic adult lounge space for their family and friends. I wanted to take advantage of the space’s full height, so we removed the ceiling to expose the rafters. This exposed all the different angles of the roof line. These angles created interesting shapes and forms that inspired our design.

I wait all winter for the first glimpse of green in spring. After winter’s darkness, I can’t wait to be outside and soak up the light. It is exhilarating to see nature come alive, bursting with color and brightness. Color has a great ability to affect our mood, and green in particular lifts my spirits. In today’s blog post I’ll be sharing how we like to use this cheerful color in our interiors.

Designing spaces that are integrally beautiful but also functional are the highest priority for my firm. We often design cabinetry that is tailor-made for our client’s needs and unique lifestyles. Our designs are chic, interesting, and purposeful.

We value what our clients have to say and therefore listening to their preferences is very important to us. Some of our clients love the use of strong color and others prefer subtle more monochromatic palettes. We often use color as accents that lead our eye around a room.
